Tips for Mail Management

Every day at our office and home, we're bombarded with tons of mail. It's so overwhelming that we just ignore the piles for days. How do we solve this problem?
"Mail Mania"

Everything needs a "home" including your incoming mail.  As soon as it arrives, sort all pieces of mail into categories: To Toss, To Pay, To Call, To Reply, To Read Later.  If applicable, create "mailboxes" and separate mail for other individuals in your home or office.  To contain all of this mail and "To Do's," use stacked trays, hanging folders in a drawer or a portable Oxford®  DecoFlex® Desktop File.

Process all mail immediately, sit/stand next to the trash can and toss outside envelope and unwanted advertising.  Flatten invoices and letters, then paperclip the return envelope to left side so they won't be lost.  On invoices, use highlighter to mark due date, amount due, and any other important information.  Write the date to pay -- 7 days before due date -- circle and highlight, then add these invoices to your Quicken/Quickbooks software or handwritten Monthly Budget.  Keep invoices in chronological order by due date in your To Pay folder or tray.  Mark dates on your calendar as "reminder" to pay bills.

Tips for Time Management

I waste lots of time every day shuffling paper and looking for files. How can I be more productive?
"Time Waster"

All those things you use most often, including files, should live within arm's reach. Consider this space your very own "Million Dollar Real Estate." Pick up each item and ask yourself if it should stay there. Remember: "If you can't find something in 30 seconds, it's in the wrong place."

This time-tested technique is applicable everywhere in your office and home. Try it and see!

Tips for Travel

My husband and I are planning a vacation in Europe next summer.  What should I plan to take? I always pack clothes and shoes I never wear.
"The Travelers"

A few questions to ask yourself and our Basic Packing Tips are ...
  • Where are you going?  Research weather conditions at destination with your travel agent or on the Internet.
  • When will you be there (season)?  Summertime = cool, comfortable clothing, shoes, etc. ... plus one jacket for casual & one for dressy occasions.
  • What will you do while there?  Review travel brochures & have a "plan" (places to go, things to do) before your trip.
  • Why suffer with excess luggage?  "KISS - Keep It Simple, Sweetheart" ... make decisions now so you'll have FUN during your trip. Start a LIST now, save time later!!
  • How to avoid packing too much ... color-coordinate your attire ... 3-4 tops, 3 slacks, 3 skirts, 2-3 pairs of shoes, 2 jackets & 1 dressy outfit.  Plan to "mix & match" and handwash items. Most hotels provide an iron and/or laundry services.
  • Important -- don't forget money conversion info, travelers checks, credit card co. and emergency numbers + addresses, electrical converters, camera & film, mini-size cold-water laundry soap, plus pre-packed cosmetic bag & shaving kit (travel-size products).
