RED FLAGS FOR TIME BANDITS

On the 4th of July we celebrate Independence Day.  Why wait for once a year to be independent from the dastardly bandits who rob us of our valuable time?  How often do these red flags appear?

According to a survey by Priority Management Systems, an organizational skills training franchise, here are the Top 10 Time Wasters, along with our solutions.

  • SHIFTING PRIORITIES -- each day decide the 3 most urgent/important projects to complete, then do them.
  • TELEPHONE INTERRUPTIONS -- voice mail can collect your calls for an hour, return several at one time.
  • LACK OF DIRECTION/OBJECTIVES -- every day should have a plan (list of Things To Do) in your datebook.
  • ATTEMPTING (TO DO) TOO MUCH -- someone else in your office or family can handle some of those tasks.
  • DROP-IN VISITORS -- tell people you're busy, let them know the best time to visit or make a lunch date.
  • INEFFECTIVE DELEGATION -- be aware of others' skills and give them appropriate projects to do.
  • CLUTTERED DESK/LOSING THINGS -- everything deserves a "home."  Things should go back home so you can find them later.
  • PROCRASTINATION/LACK OF SELF-DISCIPLINE -- do the hardest task first, then all the others seem more fun.
  • INABILITY TO SAY "NO" -- simply say, "I can't do it this time, maybe next time."
  • MEETINGS -- have an agenda, set boundaries of time to begin and end, then leave!

SOLVING THE PUZZLE

Freedom is a choice and it means existing without restraints. To work and live without clutter or chaos is a "choice" we have today.  A common problem area is the desk. "There's too much stuff on it and it's hard to work," said a client.

For many years, I've taught clients that everyone owns "Million Dollar Real Estate."  What?  Do this ... sit in you desk chair, stretch out your arms and spin around.  This space within arm's reach is your most valuable space.  Items and paperwork that are allowed to "live" there should only be what you use daily or weekly.  Anything used less often should be moved several feet away.  Supplies, files and equipment accessed only a few times a year should be stored even further away
.

After creating personalized systems, maintaining those systems and following procedures will help you stay organized.  "Organizing is a 'process' ...  it's not a one-day project."  We'll teach you how.
